> Doesn’t that mean there’s no “too young,” either?
> Yes and no. “Yes” for all purposes of working with ability. “No” from perspectives of responsibility, culture, and law. This question is more complex (and this post about the ageist notion of anyone being “too old”).
Ah, the monkey's paw closes. How dare you say someone is too old, for having expectations based on an older version of reality that may or may not reflect the realities and social norms of the present? It's simply ageist to identify the part of their consciousness that objects.
But the children? We discount them from the start, until they're the beneficiary of age and wisdom. Surely then they won't become worse people, knowing responsibility, culture and law.
I don’t think the issue with Biden was ageism. It was more that he had cognitive decline which often comes with age. I think moderates and conservatives were also not happy with the gaslighting that tried to cover up and deny Biden’s mental decline. But it wasn’t solely about age, although some people summarized the situation by saying “he’s too old”, which I agree is ageist in itself.
Judging by his recent podcast appearances, he is probably still fine. But it's also clear that he won't be for long, and it would have almost felt cruel had he been serving as president in his final years. He seems like the type of guy who'd rather spend time with his family and grandchildren.
