It seems dual screens would solve their issue. No app switching, and users can still get easy access to their contacts, calendar, music, maps of choice, etc.
I don’t think I could ever buy a car without CarPlay. I don’t like leaving CarPlay to access can controls, but killing CarPlay isn’t the solution for this design problem.
You don’t even need dual screens. You can do it Picture in Picture.
They already have a dedicated section for whatever “app” is running. Just make the CarPlay stream another app.
Regardless, RJs point is moot. CarPlay 2 offers integrated support for car controls, and CarPlay 1 allowed apps to do the same. Other companies do this already like Porsche.
This is just JD trying to justify not opening up their ecosystem because it’ll be a long term revenue stream for them.
