I've had to look for a few internships during my CS masters, the tip I always found most useful is to look up companies that look good in your area, search their website for a number, pick up the phone and call.
I introduce myself and what I'm looking for, I know if they're interested in under a minute, write down the contact, and move on to the next.
Using this improved my experience tenfold compared to: researching the recruiter, sending an email + cover letter, waiting for a response, having 2-3 email exchanges, etc...
I don't think I ever got a job/internship by applying for a job opening.
I did get lucky with linkedin maybe once, when a tech lead sent me a message directly.
