Google plans to stop announcing BGP routes at IX (twitter.com/woodyatpch)

Title is misleading: they will no longer use route servers at exchanges, is all. This won't affect regular peering sessions, and they explicitly invite folks to request them. Much ado about nothing.

But isn't the whole point of IX and IX route servers to openly peer with every IX members automatically, instead of doing individual private peeing with each member?

This looks like a step back to introduce some extra policies and individual private peering...

The title is accurate because Google plans to stop announcing routes and accept them to/from the IX. Forcing members to private peer with them individually instead.

It appears that Google will no longer open peering with IX members, not sure if this is global or only for certain IX.
