Ask HN: What are some lesser-known computer programming publishers?
8 points by keyvank on March 20, 2024 | hide | past | favorite | 9 comments
I'm writing a programming book, and I haven't been lucky in convincing the famous publishers (O'Reilly, Manning, Apress, PragProg, etc.), to publish my book. I was curious if there are some other, perhaps newer, programming publishers that are just starting up and with which I can try my luck?

What is your book about?

I may be able to publish it for you. Drop your email below and I'll reach out to you.

Self publishing is an option, of course, but if you don't have an audience, the chances of making a single sale are very low.

This is it: https://keyvan.me/tsp Let's talk! keyvankambakhsh@gmail.com

As tomcam said, why not self-publish? There are lots of options for self-publishing both ebooks and print books nowadays (in formats like PDF and ePub), and many options for selling them too.

Plus, it is not mutually exclusive with going with a traditional publisher. You can do both.

And you may be able to negotiate a better deal with a publisher if you sell some books on your own first. I've read that some people have done that.

Didn't know I can do both! May give it a shot

What is the topic?

Another is No Starch Press. Have you tried Packt? I thought Packt would publish anything.

Do you have any idea what kind of percentage you will get from sales? I've heard that it is very difficult to make a good return from book sales unless it is a huge success.

It discusses from-scratch implementation of many kind of software. This is the book: https://keyvan.me/tsp

I like nostarch a lot! Discussed the book with them as well, but no luck.

Revenues are small I know, I'm just challenging myself to become a published author for now.

Why not self-publish?

I think publishers do a much better job marketing the book for you, plus I don't have enough money for self-publishing ;(

Self publishing is free. If you’re talking about getting printed copies in bookstores, you’re technically correct about their being better at marketing but believe me, they expect you to do the bulk of that too.

Take a look at some of these articles:
