Interacting with Facebook is always a losing proposition. This isn't the first time they have altered the deal with respect to the VR ecosystem they bought, rebranded and closed. They will alter it again. And all of that is mostly irrelevant because Facebook doesn't even make HMD VR displays anymore. They only sell smartphone computer equivalent standalones that introduce extra latency if you use it with a real computer.
All this is true BUT Meta Stories glasses are an impressive achievement: I use mine daily for YouTube videos. The hands-free feature vs any smartphone makes them highly effective.
You don't need a Facebook account though, you can migrate to a Meta account which can be optionally linked to Facebook and Instagram only if you choose.
