It will be interesting to see these numbers over time to tell how much of this is people being more open due to less fear of judgement, compared to how much of this is a fad and younger people seeking to identify as something to fit in with their peer group, or to have an easy in to a peer group.
With bi making up 50%, that seems like an easy in to the group, gives the person some political power, and they really don’t need to do anything different than what they were doing before. I’d be curious to see the gender breakdown on the bi category, I have some assumptions on what is happening there.
personal anecdote: back when i was a teenager in the mid 00s, being bisexual was suddenly the "in thing" amongst the emo/scene/whatever crowd and i wouldn't have been able to count how many of my peers were suddenly claiming to have always been bi seemingly overnight. of course almost none of them had any sexual/romantic contact with the same sex whatsoever and they mostly were back to identifying as straight within a few years.
kinda sucked for me at the time as i actually am bisexual and nobody took me seriously lol.
80’s, it seemed every coed had legit experimented. Which they always wanted to bring up but never wanted to fufill every guys fantasy.
They were also smart and knew the gay bars had better music and wouldn’t have to deal with the bros. Being dude chaperone wasn’t super fun but I knew all the bartenders by then so they gave me drinks and kept me on the quarantine stool.
I find it to be coincidental to the general interest in mental health and the resulting wave of self-diagnoses. It has its positive sides - even I did eventually seek psychological help after going through all the resources available online - but I've also met people in real life who collected personality disorders like badges of honor. There's one couple I know who only formed a strong bond after she's convinced him that his family is toxic and he should go no contact with them, just as she did long time before that.
I'm not so sure that you can use being "bi" to get "power" in this kind of group. There's some fairly heavy dislike of bisexuality. It isn't universal but is not negligible either.
50% are bi. Which is a far cry from the insanity an acronym like lgbtq would have you believe.
Think 50% are just the B in lgbtq. I would assume another gigantic percentage is also L or G. Leaving a negligible amount for the rest of the acronym which is more political than sexual.
