Ask HN: Should I get Instagram? Tips for socializing

Hi, wanted to socialize a little bit more - what can you say? Is it good to use? I got ADHD, and maybe it's calming myself a bit more down.

Is there any app I should use for being more up to date with friends and other people I might want to follow?

If not Instagram, what would you recommend me?

I just made an mastodon account but I don't really follow the sense since I am not a blogger nor I do have an online friend community.

I followed the Chaos Computer Club and joined some IRC's of them.

I stopped socializing since many years ago. Now I wanna see if I missed something?

I liked to talk to people a lot but now these days I stopped talking to my "go-to-friends" since they don't like my hyperactive, nervous behaviour all the time. So I am a bit lost here, any helps?

Instagram is a horrible place if you just want to follow your friends without distractions. Meanwhile you can create alternative feeds only including selected accounts, you can't set them as the default feed. You will also get tiktok-like shorts (called "reels", but generally the same thing: overprocessed 8 seconds long videos with little to no added value) in the default feed, in the "discovery" tab, and also in a dedicated reels tab.

If you want to socialize more, look for an offline hobby and save your nerves.


Mastodon seems generally to be ND-friendly, according to ND people that I interact with on it, though maybe spend some effort to find the right instance and/or be prepared to move (there's a mechanism for it) in due course.
