Beeper's effort to keep iMessage on Android keeps getting more complex (theverge.com)

TL;DR seems to be to just buy a Mac, have the Mac regularly connect to renew registration data and then you can use Beeper for iMessage via email address only.

So essentially it’s defeated because that’s been the requirement to use iMessage anyways, with the only benefit being that now you can access your iMessages on a non Apple device if you own a Mac.

But I suspect Macs aren’t people’s “gateway drug” when entering Apple’s walled garden. It’s more likely an iOS device is.

Also love how they just casually encourage people to share their expensive Mac’s registration information with “10-20” people, without knowing if and how Apple might hit those devices in an attempt to mitigate this.

You could be ending up with a $600 computer that’s banned from a bunch of Apple services because of this.

Apple doesn’t tend to be so heavy handed, but their ToS allows for it, they seem eager to die on the Beeper hill and there’s precedent in the game console world where consoles are banned from interacting the vendor’s network “for safety reasons” when it even so much as detects its jailbroken.

Whatever your stance on this, I think Beeper should at least show and convey caution when making suggestions like this.

From what it sounds like, even Beeper Mini was registering users against Beeper's Mac "server" IDs so it has always required having Mac hardware of some kind to get onto iMessage. Smoke and mirrors, hopes and dreams.
