[flagged] 80% of /Newest [Flagged][Dead]?
9 points by panny on Nov 25, 2023 | hide | past | favorite | 12 comments
Is this due to bots clicking flagged or is HN really this authoritarian now? For instance, https://utcc.utoronto.ca/~cks/space/blog/linux/CoreutilsTestPeculiarity was flagged dead, but seems like core HN type of material. I can vouch, yeah, but 80% of content needs vouching now? What happened to this website??

Unsurprisingly, I'm flagged just for asking. And no one will vouch. I guess that answers my Ask.

Doesn't look like having been flagged at the moment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38412049

Look at 2nd and 3rd page of /newest right now: https://news.ycombinator.com/newest?next=38412074&n=31

Sure, but to be frank, most of it deserves to be flagged (blogspam, tutorials, App-Store promo links and so on).

I mostly agree (just two posts I upvoted got flagged), but still this is pretty unusual (I think more flags needed for [flagged][dead] than just for [flagged], and nothing on those two pages is marked [flagged] without [dead]).

Maybe some user got "helper mod" status, and a flag power with more weight or something.

In my experience flagging stuff, once the flag threshold is reached, it goes straight to [flagged][dead]. If you see something that's [flagged] but not [dead], it got revived somehow.

Only because I vouched, then it went up to 78 points.

90% of ‘new’ is just reposts of things that have already been heavily discussed here.

Personally, I am glad to go through the new queue and flag topics that have been beaten to death.

I’m sorry that you feel participating in the curation of this site this makes you oppressed, but you need to learn not to take things so personally, and realize that there may be many reasons users flag posts.

You can always email hn@ycombinator.com and ask.

Why make so many assumptions?

> Why make so many assumptions?

This is a good question. “Is it bots or user behavior, I’m just asking” is rife with assumptions such as

HN varies widely/wildly by time of day and week.

Good to notice. I just adjust my interaction with it accordingly.

Yeah, I also noticed this - I check /newest every day and today it looked quite unusual.

From what I've seen, anything that is slightly negative about Israel concerning the current conflict is flagged, even if it is tech related.
