Very similar to Amazigh tattoos, who are also disappearing due to Islam. I wonder how widespread tattoos were in north African and middle eastern people in ancient history. Bit of an aside, but ... no gloves? Eh? The process seems a bit less messy than machined tattoos, but you're still puncturing the skin and still seems like pretty risky business to be doing every day.
