And this is why I (sadly) no longer recommend normies to join any other instance than mastodon.social or mastodon.online.
There's enough confusion to handle just by entering the fediverse. :)
Other than the subtle differences in UX between all the clients, it seems just as easy to teach new users to open statuses on their home instances to see full replies. That's still a good idea to teach even for mastodon.social/mastodon.online users because they don't have complete views either but they will more likely mislead people into thinking they do.
