Are there applications where ant colony algorithms are actually widely used and have state of the art performance? In my experience with the travelling salesman problem they do very badly compared to simpler and faster methods like 2-opt.
It sounds like a neat idea but I haven't seen a problem where it works well in practice. I'm curious if there are real world success stories.
