For Carlos Santana, a Passion for Rock Began as a Walk in the Park (wsj.com)

Santana's Woodstock version of Soul Sacrifice[0] must be one of the greatest live performances ever. The band is locked in, Santana's overdriven tone is excellent and just right. It's my favorite.

Apparently they'd all dropped acid right before going on stage, so that probably helped a bit. :)

The drummer, Michael Shrieve, was only 20 at the time of that performance. The look on joy and elation seen on face as he is performing is really quite something.

In several interviews, Santana recalled experiencing the effects of psychedelics during the performance, but got it together for the finale. "By the time we got to 'Soul Sacrifice', I had come back from a pretty intense journey. Ultimately, I felt we had plugged in to a whole lot of hearts at Woodstock".

"The neck of the guitar started wavering like a snake, and I was like oh, uh-oh, so I just started making faces, because I was trying to keep it tame, you know, I was trying to keep it from slithering all over the place."[0]

Thank you for that one! Shrieve absolutely kills it, and Santana is giving off enough energy to power the gear with. Amazing recording. I'll have to re-play it now :) (and again...)

> Mom lesson? She taught me that spiritual, disciplined people get to see more rainbows and miracles than others.

That's an interesting comment - so much wrapped up in that. I wish it had had more context rather than added somewhat chockablock to the end of the article.

His younger brother Jorge, who as mentioned in the article shared a room with Carlos when they were little, turned out the be a very fine guitarist as well.

Awesome. I was going to post another version of this song.

It’s on a Fania All Stars album with Jan Hammer of Miami Vice fame.

And they had an album together in early 90's, "Santana Brothers", which besides his brother Jorge also includes his nephew Carlos Hernandez.
