Without wanting to diss my fellow Australians (though I too was absolutely perplexed by the focus on toilet paper; folks - this is a respiratory virus not a gastro-intestinal one!), perhaps one reason is because we are so far from the rest of the world, and import LOTS of stuff. As global trade came to a halt, perhaps we were more sensitive to that possibility?
Note: I will admit that when I found myself forced to wait in a supermarket queue for half an hour to get a pack of toilet paper, I did wonder whether I had been prematurely harsh on the more panicked among my fellow citizens.
