Can a person be fed fat through an IV or would astronauts need to put on massive weight before long missions? That would be an awkward detail left out of sci-fi.

Bears put on massive weight, and might gain up 4 kg per day according to this [0] article. And up to 30% of their body weight is lost during hibernation according to this [1] one.

You could but there's a high risk of fungal growth. A tube through your nose would be better but still present its own risks.

What about a tube up your ass? Just kidding... unless?

Pretty sure putting anything up your ass can cause rectal cancer.

Does this potentially mean that stories of humans hibernating during famine aren't BS?

very cool that it works in mice which dont normally hibernate, will be interesting to see what happens with humans

Benny Craig 'Torpor Clinic' burn fat ( lose weight ) and take a holiday, get that really Deep-Sleep /s

Forget space travel, I expect a Tessier-Ashpool type situation where billionaires and members of Congress and whatnot are only briefly woken up every few decades to make a few decisions and so retain their grip on power by never dying.

Are they inside the matrix while they sleep?
