Maybe they met a skunk. But how would a skunk find its way to this side of the Atlantic?


There are skunks in Europe[1], but they look nothing like what that beast is supposed to.

Medieval Europeans would have been familiar with polecats. They are/were used for pest control, although they were considered pests themselves. They're probably the ancestor species for ferrets too

In the 70s I knew someone who kept them as pets and for hunting rabbits. They really do stink


Sounds like the medieval equivalent of the legendary jackalope.
