yeah - but most people don't know that there is a long and complicated history about the introduction of "modern ships" to that part of the world by Europeans. Several Imperial Powers of Europe each made an industry of supplying ships and weapons, running their own ships there, supplying belligerents with new ships to further their own ends, and so on. There are naval battle diagrams from the early 1800s that are remarkable in their breadth and supplies.
