The Wikipedia article helpfully links to an article about "mass shootings in the United States" and the first figure is 90 in a 46 year period. The Onion article claims two a month, so in 46 years you would expect 1104, which needs explanation.

Understandable. America has been down this road so many times before and we all know that America will be down this road again. The grim silence of waiting inevitably for more dead kids.
