What’s that smell? Bullshit jobs in higher education (tandfonline.com)

Name calling and complaining through the guise of scholarly work.

And the primary evidence used to determine the worth of a job in this study is self reported job satisfaction? I think that is a pretty flimsy argument. These researchers need to perhaps check their biases as they are most certainly faculty themselves.

I think there are a lot of people in the for profit world that have pretty poor job satisfaction, but I bet the contribute a great deal to the bottom line.

Faculty feel like they are losing control of the university and they are right. But the reason they are losing control is not because of some ruling oligarchy or because people like to just create “bullshit jobs,” but because the expectations of college and universities have changed dramatically. Faculty can hate it all they want, but it is the reality of today.

With that said, I sympathize with low faculty salary particularly as it pertains to adjuncts and other non-tenure track faculty. Faculty should, generally, be paid more. That wouldn’t be hard for many universities, but supply and demand. Being a professor still comes with a lot of prestige and perks so in most fields there is no shortage of adjuncts to fill in.
