Ask HN: In-depth sites for various industries' news?
161 points by gilbetron on Dec 22, 2022 | hide | past | favorite | 52 comments
During the ship-stuck-in-the-canal days, I was introduced to freightwaves.com, and another HN post along the line introduced me to mining.com. What are some interesting, in-depth sites similar to those but for other industries? Like for solar, wind, and nuclear, for instance? I can google them, but I like hearing recommendations from people that are in the industry!

We run a network of news sites for executives in various industries. They’re free to read without registration:

Waste & Recycling - https://www.wastedive.com/

Electric Utility - https://www.utilitydive.com/

Marketing - https://www.marketingdive.com/

And dozens more. Full list at https://www.industrydive.com/publications

Wow this is awesome. What I would give to access your internal records mapping out all the different competitors for each industry you cover XD

The Aviation Herald for great coverage on commercial aviation news and incidents.

Their incident breakdowns are a lesson in clear technical communication—I highly recommend checking them out even if you’re not into aviation.

And blancolorio on YouTube for video analysis of like… every incident recently.

Biotech industry: https://www.fiercebiotech.com/

Biotech how-tos: https://bitesizebio.com/

How does one find more of them and assess their quality?

For many years, and likely still today, the most in depth site for mining events (all 'facts', zero editorial) was what is now the S&P subscription service:

Metals & Mining: Global Market Intelligence

if that's your sphere of interest it's worth a trial - it logged every global mineral lease detail change and summarised every public market release ( change of board, acquisition of sub company, financial report, tech report, above threshold share assignments, etc ) for global mineral companies across Australia, Canada, South Africa, South America, (and the smaller US minerals market) etc stock exchanges with semi decent (former) USSR | Chinese coverage and bound it together with GIS, timelines, etc.

I'm no longer affiliated (for more than a decade) .. but it was a source for mining.com stories and heavily used by serious investors.

( all 'facts' .. it's a demonstrably provable fact that Company XYZ released a statement on the Toronto TSX stating the aquisition of leases 150 km NW of CrazyGully, Novada, and a similarly provable fact that former owner DEF-Co released a Technical Report with listed sample results.

It may later become a fact that the authors of that Technical Report fudged some numbers .. these are all facts and all reported | timelined.

We never stated that Ground X had resources Y - only the reported history of who reported what and what third parties did the work, etc )

The sources below are almost entirely submarine articles, but that's how trends arise. Remember hearing about ransomware attacks in the news? That was a purposeful choice a group of Cybersecurity companies chose to begin drumming up from 2019 onwards.

Govt Specific:

Government Tech Acquisition - https://www.nextgov.com/

GSA Specific - https://www.govexec.com/

DoD Policy and Acquisition - https://www.defenseone.com/

SLED Acquisition - https://www.route-fifty.com/

Hill specific stuff (ignore Magazine, Opinion, and Personal Profile articles, those are all submarine articles) - https://www.politico.com/

Cybersecurity Industry:

DarkReading (almost entirely submarine articles, but a good way to get a pulse on upcoming cybersecurity trends) - https://www.darkreading.com/

SDxCentral (same as darkreading, but better brand) - https://www.sdxcentral.com/

Poynter - https://www.poynter.org/

Columbia Journalism Review - https://www.cjr.org/

If I'm not mistaken CJR also has a podcast that I remembered liking more than the NYT or WSJ podcasts coming out at the same time (last I listened to it was 4 years ago, not sure about how good it is now).

Ooooo, I gotta check that out. I've never really been much of a podcast kinda guy, but given the CJR's quality, I'd trust it's pretty good as well!

What are submarine articles?

Paid PR pieces dressed as objective news.

If you're interesting in making gears, there's Gear Technology magazine: https://www.geartechnology.com/

Electronics Design News, EDN is a publication of long standing: https://www.edn.com/

Substack is a really, really good place for this. I don't remember how I found https://paxtier.substack.com/, but it's a great source of news on algae + seaweed technology/science.

https://thealgorithmicbridge.substack.com/ for AI

https://www.parentdata.org/ for studies related to all things parenting

https://blog.jatan.space/ for space (especially moon-related) stuff

https://yourlocalepidemiologist.substack.com/ for Covid/general epidemiology news

In optics:

Laser Focus World by Endeavour Media, the company also offers paid market studies. https://www.laserfocusworld.com

Photonics Media, also have great webinars. https://www.photonics.com

Photonics Focus, the magazine of SPIE, freely downloadable. https://spie.org/news/photonics-focus/novdec-2022

Optics and Photonics News (OPN) by Optica (formerly OSA) https://www.optica-opn.org/home/

There are many others but these are the biggest ones that I read and are not too specific to any one application or industry.

Financial reports and news of companies and stocks (mostly US, I think), focusing on values and fundamentals. I found other similar sites to be too much about short term trends and technical analysis.

American Federation of Musicians: https://www.afm.org/

Unionized musicians that work most Broadway-style shows, orchestras, operas and professional recording operations (jingles, film, etc…)

Also related to marine industry:

Another one for that industry:

Shameless plug but if you are interested in going in-depth on the latest in the cannabis industry:

(Disclosure: I founded The Highest Critic)

Shameless plug: I hope my technical robotics newsletter would hit a spot for you: https://www.weeklyrobotics.com/

https://oilprice.com/ - for oil industry/energy and not only, really informative

This is a great chance to give a shout-out to the Trade Journal Cooperative https://www.tradejournalcooperative.com/ -- not web sites, but it actually delivers paper magazines from interesting industry verticals. Everything from bowling alleys to semiconductors. Also, the covering letter from the editor is wryly observed and usually witty.

Automotive News for... automotive news: https://www.autonews.com/

For more irreverent/surreal/humorous takes on the auto industry, I can recommend The Autopian, a venture started by former Jalopnik writers:

(Jalopnik was sort of the original irreverent/surreal/humorous auto blog but it hasn't faired well in the various changes of hands for Gawker)

I know of https://autonews.io/ mentioned before. They look unrelated but would you know of any connection except for their similar domain?

Biotech and pharma: https://www.statnews.com/

Domain name industry https://circleid.com/

Posting Becker's since it hasn't been posted yet: https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/

I think there are a few more healthcare-industry specific publications that escape my mind right now, but Becker's is pretty comprehensive.

I run Payload. We are a media company that covers the space industry. We only cover the business and policy of the space industry.

You can read our daily newsletter here: https://payloadspace.com/

To follow up with a more specific question,

Anyone know a good industry news site for Supply Chain related news?

I’ve been trying to understand how the global supply chain works better, the reasons it’s still pretty jacked up, and most importantly, what is currently being done about it

I actually went down this rabbit hole yesterday and found a consensus around the Wall Street Journal's Logistics Report [1] and Supply Chain Dive [2].

[1] https://www.wsj.com/newsletters

[2] https://www.supplychaindive.com/

The Odd Lots podcast is great for this. They cover a number of different finance/economics related topics, but they've done some great deep dives into supply chain stuff - they've had the head of Flexport, the guy who runs the Port of LA, a long-haul trucker and a whole host of other folks. Just scroll through their list of old episodes until you see supply-chain related ones.

OP recommended freightwaves.com, do you mean other than that?

Feedly recommends Transport Topics: https://www.ttnews.com/ and Journal of Commerce: https://www.joc.com/

NASA Tech Briefs have been maintaining a really high standard on this type of stuff for a long time, in a variety of specialities.

Adventure motorcycles & the motorcycle industry - https://www.advrider.com/

Ag and food tech industry news: https://agfundernews.com (disclosure: I work for Agfunder)

++you guys have good stuff, thanks for your work

Aquaculture (European Focus)

And Http://www.histalk2.Com for health information systems

(Why won’t HN make you a clickable URL????)

The others are https, not http:

for everything telecom related https://www.lightreading.com/

travel: skift.com

I use this for trading/market insights. A lot of stock traders and investors use industry specific sites.

Any go tos for real estate?

The only two that I know of are https://therealdeal.com/ and https://www.housingwire.com/. Would also like any other suggestions.
