I am somewhat surprised this site has some actual European news now. Last time I tried, which was about an year ago, at least 90% of the content US/UK stuff.

Well, UK is a part of Europe[1].

Not any more. Those lucky bastards managed to escape. :P The EU I mean. :)

General news that are on TV mostly do not belong to this site. Not that I watch TV, but I am sure the EU parliament corruption scandal has been there. It has been in all news here since Friday.

I guess in the US it did not make any big headlines. Whether it belongs into HN for that reason I don't know. The submission guidelines don't seem to address the fact that TV news don't cover the same topics globally.

That's strange. I'm reading policito.eu for quite some time and they are definitely one of the top channels for receiving EU related news and also focus very much on EU news. (Which makes sense, since they also have politico.com for US-related news)

that was before, now they have been charged

Best to make a difference between detention before trial and imprisonment.

True, but she was caught with "bags of money"...

The speed of this situation unfolding makes me wonder if it was known for a while and arrests were timed for the world cup for maximum damage.

This kind of theories imply there are a relative large number of well organized, intelligent people behind it… I tend to doubt such a group of people exists, specially in this context.

As I know the theory is mostly that world cups and similar events are good times to pass unpopular laws and so on since everyone's attention is drawn to the sports event.
