The most fun I've had writing programs for 8-bit Atari's were the tools: font editors, player/missile (sprite) editors, level editors using custom character sets, etc.
It makes sense that we could cross-develop effectively today but something (maybe just nostalgia) is lost with the tools not being native, even if emulated. If we were to stay on the platform, I'd extend the emulator with additional text/graphics modes not in the original hardware so we can more text, maybe by emulating an 80-column card that existed for it.
