Very nice, but it would be nicer to use [Intl.DateTimeFormat](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Refe...) to format dates as we are not all used to the American way of formatting.

ISO-8601 and we have a deal :-)

The one true time format.

Done! Thank you for the suggestion.

On a similar note, temperatures in ºC would also be useful. Great website though!

Done, thanks!

Love it. But one suggestion, which I’ve been looking for, is to fill the knockouts bracket based on the current group standings. That’s a great way to build up the excitement

Good idea! I'll look into it tommorrow.

Actually, I think it would be nicer to compute some sort of prediction based on the results so far, the strength of the teams, and the remaining games to be played.

Just use the current betting line.

I went directly to the comment section to say the same thing

A solid replacement for my standard sports site, Wikipedia.

And wow! A real page view counter, with under 2000 hits so far! I feel like a kid again.

edit it might be nice to clarify the time zone used in the games.

for the World Cup and most other leagues, the platonic ideal of speed/freshness, information density, and legibility, is https://plaintextsports.com . It has a great World Cup presentation which can display by group or by date https://plaintextsports.com/world-cup/2022/schedule . The page sizes are something like 3 magnitudes smaller than ESPN.com, especially great for when you're actually at the game and the network is bogged down in the arena.

As a terminal lover this is amazing.

I'm curious how you loaded this in the terminal, because for me, curl spit out a ton of HTML and very little plain text. I suppose with curl only asking for `/`, I should be happy with what I got, but even when asking for plain text, I got HTML. I didn't mean to go all "no true Scotsman" on this reply, but I wish something called Plain Text Sports had actually returned plain text to me in a terminal.

I only meant that I love text based interfaces. I only know of one other example that looks good in both terminal and web: https://wttr.in

Wikipedia beats megacorp giants like Espn at displaying sports related information in so many metrics and it's not even close. Really a great example of perverted incentives. Espn is trying to show ads, while Wikipedia is trying to show information.

Hardly the case for live games. Look at the EPSN drive graphics for the NFL for instance, where it shows the gain/loss for every play and the tooltip has tons of information about what happened. The shot heatmap for basketball is another great example of ESPN adding real value even if you’ve been watching the game.

looks to be in the time zone of the current browser's locale. it says the correct time for me and i don't live anywhere near the middle east(or perhaps the person that made the site is also in my timezone so double check)

It says the correct time for me too.

I'm not that close to Qatar, and I suspect not that close to you either.

This is perfect! I've boycotting any official broadcasts. I want this WC to be a disaster(it has been the whole time, but I want the Qatari state and FIFA to feel it), but I still vaguely care about the results.

I'm relaying a German live ticker to a private chat group (family/friends) created for that reason. While at it, I started replacing common terminology with silly words because I'm still a child on the inside I guess. Makes for some hilarious phrases.

Have I missed something? What’s wrong with this WC?

The stadiums are built by what is essentially slave labour. The choice of Qatar was obviously a result of corruption in the first place as it's not even a suitable location. That's why it's in November instead of the summer, which has completely disrupted the club season by compressing it, causing a fuckton of injuries in the busiest leagues.

It's a complete shitshow any way you look at it.

All of the above combined with the fact that it has just led to some truly terrible football.

The international version of the sport is always 5-10 years, tactically, behind the club game, but the week or so most of the big teams have had to truly prepare compared to the usual 3, has ensured almost every team is playing in the same basic style and that the best players are, if not injured, then just exhausted from the hectic season.

Also it's so hot that there are 5 subs per game, which has led to 9+ minutes of stoppage time in most games, pretty bizarre. Iran just scored 2 goals in the 99th and 100th minute to win.

I don’t necessarily mind the extended stoppage time, it’s actually something I’ve believed would benefit the game for a long time. I’m glad to see it trialled in a populist tournament that should lead to lasting changes in the more interesting competitions.

Is there not a financial incentive to perform? This is how American sports keep the All-Star games competitive.

The financial incentives in national football are peanuts compared to high level club football, so not really.

- The WC is primarily a football tournament. Qatar is a country where it's too hot to play football even in the winter. They had to add ACs to the Stadiums so it's somewhat tolerable (not a joke).

- Because it's so hot in Qatar the WC was moved to the winter. This breaks the long standing tradition of doing the WC in the summer.

- In many countries where people actually care about the WC it's cold and rainy in winter. Traditions such watching the WC outside with family and friends obviously cannot exist this time around.

- There is zero football history or tradition in Qatar. Nobody there actually cares about football. Why do the WC there?

- It is very obvious that the only reason why we have a WC in Qatar is corruption. Corrupt people in the FIFA and in western goverments and willingness to bribe and do everything imaginable to get the WC from the Qatari government.

- Qatar now has 8 large and very modern football stadiums in the radius of 50km but the entire country only has less than 3 million people. For camparison London has three times the population but not as many comparable stadiums eventhough London can be considered the world capital of football. Those stadiums will most likely not be really used after the WC.

- It is a known fact that thousands of migrant workers had to die in order for those stadiums to be built.

- Fans are not allowed to wear pride flag colors. Players are not allowed to armbands with pride flag colors because the Qatari government doesn't like it.

Edit: formatting

1. This is one of that ways to get more people interested in football. Majority of the population is in south asia and chinela, Quatar is quite close and this wc is very accessible for us

2. Why world cup is held in summer? Is it because Europe is cold in winter and Europeans prefer summer. Unfortunately world is not just Europe. Since this is WORLD cup why should it not be held in seasons that is suited where it is hosted?

3.Same as above. Football is popular across world.

4. May be this is to get football more popular in middle East. Why only conduct where it is popular now. Let's conduct where more young people are present.

5. Corruption in FIFA is not new. This is not specific to this world cup.

6. So what. May be Quatar is trying to be a sports destination of MENA. It's their money. Let them spend it the way they want.

7. So has a large number of people died in making the phones, clothes, chocolates, diamond, cofee or anything in Modern world. Do you stop using phones and clothes because of that?

I come from Kerala in india where a large population emigrate to Arab countries including Quatar. Heck even my uncle was there at some point. People go to these places because they pay well. May be not as much as western world would like, but much more than we make here. So i don't give too much importance to the stories about slave labour and everything.

8. Are you coming to watch football or to promote pride culture?

The world cup is held in the summer because that's when no other football is going on. It's that simple. Moving the WC to november not only ruins the WC, but ruins the entire rest of the football season. And even doing it in November it's just too hot.

Let the people around world conduct it when it's suitable to them

Yes it's hot in quatar. So is the whole MENA. Don't they deserve to see football?

Let Europe do it in summer when it's suitable there. Let quatar do it in winter when it's suitable there..

This is the closest and most accesible football worldcup to 1 billion people in India. I am thankful to FIFA for conducting this in Quatar

Or we could have just had the WC I India. Would have been way cooler.

- Thousands of workers have died in the building process. I mean really FIFA?

- The cost of the carnival is over 200 billion usd (compare it for 0.5 billion in US 1994)

- Sexual minorities are persecuted in Qatar and FIFA completely downplays this, making the whole organization look ridiculously corrupt.

That should give you a headstart.

Of the actual app/site: Thanks, bookmarked! I also want to see the scores, but dont want anything else to do with this sh*tshow.

What is your problem with quatar spending their money?

The problem is that the Qatari state uses its blood money to buy publicity for itself and improve the optics of their slavestate by arranging lavish sports arrangements to project an air of wealth and prosperity when in fact it's nothing but a slavery powered kleptocracy.

I wonder how you could possibly be ok with this. Are you some kind of libertarian?

The money with Quatar is not blood money. It's just money from selling natural gas. Just like norway got it's pension fund.

And how is quatar a slavery. Are they slaves just because they are a monarchy?

Yes quatar is a monarchy and they behave like dictators. But so is Russia where sports competitions are held. So is china where olympicis was held.

Even the prosperity of Europe is made on the back of colonialism.

So is London which is the place where all the criminals from around world move their money into.

So i Switzerland which has a reputation of storing black money.

So is France which still leech Money from Africa.

1. Do you plan to not use petroleum and natural gas which comes mostly from MENA and Russia

2. DO you plan to not use phones made in china which is a dictatorship

If a married woman gets raped in Qatar, she cannot report it to police, as that would lead to her getting the death penalty for adultery. That country is absolutely fucking horrible. Like, even places ad bad as India where men regularly attack women with acid pale in comparison.

So what is the problem? Is it slavery? Is it that quatar is hot? Is it that quatar doesn't like LGBTQ?

Why new reasons come up in every comment rather than any justification for the parent comment at all?

Are you going to watch football or to marry someone?

And should you boycott US also where random people kill innocent children regularly for no reason?

From this discussions in this thread atleast the problem with quatar is nothing of what is mentioned. Westerners can't accept that a nation culturally so different from theris can host an important tournament. They can't accept that people's have different priorities different cultures and different way of looking at life. They can't accept that about 2 billion people of the world are having the most accesible world cup.

In short, they can't accept that world doesent exist just for westerners. Since they can't tell that openly due to being called out for racism, they come up with these reasons..

You are the one who is trying to turn around the discussion all the time. So give me some straight answers:

You think punishing a woman for getting raped is acceptable?

You think punishing someone for being homosexual is acceptable?

You think treating workers building the Worldcup facilities like slaves by working them to death is acceptable?

Please give me straight yes/no answers to those. No more hand-wavy BS and then stating how accessible the Worldcup now is.

It's mind-bending how you can turn around and call criticizing these things a proxy for racism, or that it's just cultural difference.

> And should you boycott US also where random people kill innocent children regularly for no reason?

You're already admitting here how different it is. You say random people, and that's what it is. Individual people or a group of people misbehaving, acting against the law which can and does get prosecuted. Not always unfortunately, and there are systematic problems that need to be addressed, but unlike Qatar's many crimes against humanity, they are not institutionalized and written in law. Again, the West is by far not perfect, but compared to these kind of countries, we've come a very long way.

Am not telling that is acceptable. Am just telling that this is a football World Cup. Not a a cultural world cup.

And any nation including European who has hosted it has done similar bad things in past. So are why outage only now?

Us went ahead and killed thousands of women and children in Iraq. So do you boycott sports in US.

UK still white washes colonialism in Schools. They have not apologized for jalianwalabagh massacre. Do you boycott them.

France still leeches money from poor countries in Africa. Do you boycott them.

And finally quatar and saudi uses slave labour and treats homosexuals badly. Do you boycott petroleum and natural gas.

Then why only boycott world cup in quatar

Many mobiles and textile manufacturing is with slave labour. So is chocolates and cofee. You consume them. So what's new about quatar.

Yes for me accesibility is important. Because my friends can watch it without spending a year of their earnings. If you can conduct World cups in uk is or France or Russia, then you can conduct in quatar too. Regards of openions reeking in hypocrisy and racism

Well, i certainly cannot address every single wrongdoing in existence, as a single person I cannot save the world through boycotts, obviously. But yes, I do call out the kinds of things you mention. I get into arguments with people who are unaware or ignorant to the wrongdoings of the west or their country in particular, and claim the west is perfect today. It's not. But it has come a very long way in the past century. I try to buy fair trade goods where possible, even if it's sometimes more than double the price. Did I travel to San Fernando to verify my coffee really comes from farmers that get treated fair? Of course not. I boycott all brands that advertise using the Qatar world cup. I boycott Nestlé. I'm trying to do the right thing without dedicating my life to it. So don't call me a hypocrite to deflect from the fact that you're putting your desire for an accessible world cup over basic human rights issues with the hosting country.

Hey Cole,

I think the site looks great and is very useful. The one suggestion I have would be to add a bit of space to everything to give it some breathing room.

These are the changes I made: try them out and see what you think.

body { padding: 10px; background: #f0f0f0; }

#groups { grid-template-columns: repeat(auto-fill, minmax(350px, 1fr)); }

.group { padding: 10px; margin: 4px; }

.group > span { margin: 0 20px 20px 0; }

.gmatch { padding: 6px 0; }

I’ll go for the opposing view, the compact spacing is great and looks great on iPhone :)

I also rather like the compact spacing, but I appreciate your feedback!

It would be nice if the bracket updated every minute, along with the game. So if the game concludes, it updates the bracket.

This is great. One huge nitpick with sports stats and standing sites these days (even Google’s which are pretty clean) is the lack of info density. I just want tables with little padding showing me all the info I want without page refreshes. This is exactly that.

Thanks, that's what I was going for!

Nice. But please check your data source, it might have a bug. For example: Group E, Germany <-> Japan. End result 1:2, but the game details list 2 goals for each side.

After further review, I think the extra goal was disallowed. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a way to filter these out.

I will take a look, sorry!

I’ve been a football fan for nearly 40 years and have never heard the term Bracket related to the game - what does it mean?

It mainly refers to the tree-like graph of teams in a tournament, I usually hear it in reference to a basketball or American football game though.

It's sometimes called "elimination tournament" or just "draw" too.

Just as a curiosity, where you from? Is English your mother-language?

UK but live in Australia (it’s not used here either as far as I know).

I think the UK equivalent is probably Draw as in “this is the draw for the World Cup”.

Bracket in the UK is something used to hold up shelving.

I’ve seen it recently, like so much stuff it’s u.s cultural imperialism taking over the Anglosphere. See also “Black Friday”, some random time in the middle of November.

Tournament schema: final, semi-finals, quarter-finals, etc.

This is great!

Just a few thoughts: It could be good to add a `X` a kind of close button to the pop up when you click on a match. It's not entirely intuitive where to click to close it if you're on mobile.

On that line, when you double click on a match (or double tap to enter full screen) it looks very bad on mobile.

This is a very useful website! Thanks.

I'll ad an X button first thing tomorrow, thanks!

Done!

I'll totally use this unless it gets trampled to death. "Did you see that ludicrous display last night?"

Event list for match #8 is not in chronological order according to the timestamps. Did you mean it to be? (Entry 4 shuffle up to should come first, then 3 second and the rest seem ok)

Thanks! I believe that this is a mix-up in my data source, as they mark the raw timestamps in the wrong order.

Hey, just a heads up : In the group D, the Tunisia-France score was 1-0 and not 1-1. The last goal by Griezmann was cancelled.

Thanks! I'm working on adding a manual override, but the upstream data source has not been fixed yet: https://github.com/estiens/world_cup_json/issues/226.

EDIT: I have applied a basic fix for it on my end, but there may be instances where it still shows 1-1.

Nice!

But would be also good to show the actual tables and not just the points, maybe even updating live during the matches, since in most cases the points are not the single thing that decide the outcome, but also goals scored, goal difference etc.

Thank you for this great summary!

A minor suggestion: groups are so tight this year that global goal average could be useful, maybe in parentheses after the points ?

Good idea! I just added detailed ranking information like goal differentials and goals for/against. Is that what you were looking for? You can get to it by clicked/tapping on the group points and flags.

Iran and Wales are playing right now, Iran had a goal disallowed but the match summary records it as a goal (even though it correctly shows that the game is still 0-0)

So minor bug.

I'm not really sure how to address this, as the data source does not mark whether a goal has been disallowed or not.

SO much more pleasant to look at than the floating tile-based Figma JS nonsense every web developer is pumping out these days. Great job, bookmarked.

Thank you!

Where is Match 55 (F winner vs E runner up)?

I've fixed it, still unsure about the cause of the problem but it should be there now.

Have never followed soccer/football, I find it weird that it doesn't have something like Liquipedia.

Huge fan of projects like this. It is a very straight-forward way of presenting the entire competition.

Nice job.

same thoughts from me! really like it.

Thanks!

Great project! Would be interesting to see tie breaker information too. For example, Uruguay and South Korea tied 0-0 but Uruguay is listed 2nd in Group H ahead of South Korea. Maybe because Uruguay had 1 yellow card and South Korea had 2?

Yes for now based on yellow cards.

The tiebreaker goes this way

- Goal difference

- Total number of goals scored.

- Number of points between teams concerned.

- GD between the teams concerned.

- Team conduct score

  - Yellow Card: -1 point

  - Indirect Red card (2 Yellows): -3 points

  - Direct Red: -4 points

  - Yellow and Direct Red: -5 points

I will look into this, thanks!

Suggestion: if a match is less than 24 hours in the future but it happens to be after midnight, show that as e.g. “1am” or “1am +1” because from the perspective of the user those are the same “day”.

Good idea!

EDIT: added!

Brilliant tool here, thanks Cole.

Suggestion: Hovering over the detail for a game, is it possible when listing substitutions to see the name of the player replaced as well as the name of the player introduced?

I will try! The data source only has this information for certain games, and I'm not sure if there's any pattern why.

Brilliant work! Just checked the tables to catch up on the last day's games and see you've already worked this in. Thank you so much! :)

This is great! I have been trying to find a way to scrape information about tv channel schedule in different countries e.g UK, US. Would it be possible and helpful to add something like that?

Thanks, I'm not sure I understand though, can you give me an example?

Something like this https://m.livesoccertv.com/match/4350447/wales-vs-iran/ where it has information about the coverage information.

I'll look into it, good idea!

There is a bug where like now 2 matches at the same time only one shows twice up in the group column.

Working on fixing this!

Can you also do a FIFA interactive corruption tracker?

Like an animated visualization of their corruption and money flows that is easily to extend in the future because there’s a lot more to come.

a bracket is missing in your tournament bracket. F Winner, E runner up. It was there before the scores were finalized and Morocco won the group, gone now.

I've fixed it, still unsure about the cause of the problem but it should be there now.

Really nice. Every football scores site or app I've tried is either so buggy or stuffed full of ads it's virtually unusable.

Did it die? I only see a gray screen on iPhone

It's taking up to 2 seconds to load, but it works on my iphone rn.

When the group stages are all over, please flip the brackets to the top, and tables to the bottom for less scrolling!

Already thought of! The group stage section will collapse.

This is super useful. Do you have a donate link? I’d love to kick you a few bucks for your time. Thanks!

I hope that once the group games are done with, the bottom games chart is switched with the top groups chart.

It will!

The site is golden. Minor suggestion, count down during the halftime break might be helpful.

Good idea, thanks!

I like it. However all the dates and times are in american format that I don't use.

I'll see if I can localize it. Can you give me an example format?

I personally use "en-GB", which results something like dd.MM. HH:mm. JS date object has bunch of methods for locale formatting. edit: actually it seems my browser does not expose correct locales...

The dates/times should now be localised!

Can you also look at adding the time/date's timezone on the end? Thanks, I love the site's layout/design

What do you mean?

I think he meant like: "23/11/2022, 15:00:00 GMT+1"

Doesn't seen necessary imo as long as the dates aren't in MM/DD/YYYY format and are in browser's timezone.

The wailing and gnashing of teeth if KSA continue to top their group will be intense

Love this, just shared it with 7 close friends who will all appreciate it.

Thanks! I appreciate the shares

It would be nice if the date of the upcoming matches also shown.

It is shown: "Match 49 12/3", 3rd of December.

It would be nice if it used an international date format and not the American one.

Done

There seem to be some errors in the console:

- After page load: [Vue warn]: Error in render: "TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'id')"

- When hovering over a match: [Vue warn]: Failed to resolve directive: if-else

Yes, mainly debugging stuff I didn’t bother fixing.

Where is H group winner?

Match 56?

wonderful design.

thank you!

[flagged]

OP is trying to just share something cool and fun, and now you come here making it political.

Chill out. Obviously worker solidarity is very important - you say it as if OP didn't already know that. There's a time and a place for this sort of stuff and this isn't it.

This attitude is why terrible regimes with abysmal human rights records keep getting to sportswash themselves. The Qatari government said the quiet part out loud when they said that once the first whistle blows the world will forget about any controversy.

I think that’s up to Fifa’s Congress, not an internet commenter’s views. You know they voted for Qatar due to this attitude?

Yes, they knew that people would complain ahead of time and if they just plowed ahead that once the games started everyone would stop talking about it and get back to watching sports.

I know this because they, the international Olympic committee, the Qatari government, F1, and everyone involved with Liv Golf have said it about their respective events. They’re not being circumspect about this. And, because of this attitude, they’re right. At the end of the day, people want to watch sport and hope that Someone Else solves this problem for them.

Sports, especially global sporting events, are always political.

Double especially when cities bid and bribe for the right to host.

Triple when they have to build infrastructure that wasn't there before.

Asking someone, quite politely, to merely acknowledge the impact this event had on tens of thousands of people is not out of line in the least.

> OP is trying to just share something cool and fun, and now you come here making it political.

It is important to make it political. The stadiums where this WC is taking place were built by slaves. The host country rejects fundamental humanitarian values such as respect for sexual preferences. Innocent people who did nothing wrong to anyone else except loving someone from the same gender are hurt by them if they thinnk they can get away with it. All of this is deeply unfair and heartbreaking and it should not be overlooked in the name of "cool and fun", if you are to keep any pretense of basic decency.

> if you are to keep any pretense of basic decency.

Very condescending for someone who is deeply mistaken. I think it also breaks rules from the guidelines (since this site is so keen to enforce them).

To elaborate: we all, every day, use things that have a back story. I'm sure we consume things from China that were built under terrible conditions (the most famous one being the iPhone). We probably take things for granted, or ar ignorant about how something came to be. That's why, you have to draw a line, otherwise it's endless. If it's the OPs choice, fine, but not under pressure.

> Very condescending for someone who is deeply mistaken.

You pointed out other human rights violations in the world, even though I never claimed that human rights violations only take place in Qatar. You failed to mention what is it that I am "deeply mistaken" about.

I also did not advocate for the OP to be forced or prevented from doing anything. I encourage them to use their nice skills on something that does not help further the agenda of oppressive regimes, but that is my view and opinion. The only person here who seems to want to impose anything on others is you, by appealing to site rules in an attempt to silence me.

I decide where I draw the line, not you.

I don't mind, it's a good place to share it.

How is sharing about the often ignored and poorly treated people that made everything possible political? If so what isn’t? The games?

Or, if you want something more up do date: https://www.amnesty.org/en/documents/mde22/6106/2022/en/

Added.

thanks so much!
