Does anyone have experience working this into their blog/personal site?

https://writefreely.org/ and https://microblog.pub/ are two examples of what I'm thinking of, but I'm wondering if there are other options and/or ways to bolt the functionality on without being opinionated about your blog's implementation.

I love the idea that my blog could have Mastodon posts, that my posts are Mastodon posts, that replies are comments, etc. But I haven't seen too much of this done in the real world.

I haven't, but the way I'd do it would be to use something like this: https://github.com/edsu/feediverse which till turn your RSS feed into Mastodon toots.

If you want to use Mastodon for comments, there are a bunch of blogs written about integrating them into a comment section (for example: https://zerokspot.com/weblog/2021/01/07/comments-via-mastodo...)

Here's a list of developer tools that might be helpful:

There is a plugin for wordpress that exposes a blog to the fediverse.
