Matt Mullenweg thinks Tumblr can be a better Twitter than Twitter ever was (techcrunch.com)

This is a mistake we see happening over and over. Most prominently with Facebook right now.

Social networks should just stay in their lane, it's fine to steal (copy) features and ideas but changing your whole network to copy another site just because they're 'flavor de jour' is stupid.

Twitter and Tumblr are two fundamentally different sites, trying to change one to the other will just destroy it. Tumblr already destroyed themselves when they banned porn and Twitter has a large porn base.

I doubt it. I stopped using Tumblr around the time they removed adult content; not because I was there for porn, but because it just seemed so restrictive and I knew there would be chilling effects. You have to look over your shoulder with everything you post, and that's just not a nice place to be in when you want to get creative juices flowing or just reblog things for hours.

Bring back 'adult content' and I'll gladly check out Tumblr again.

Twitter still allows adult material and Tumblr still doesn't. Good luck, Matt! With that distinction in place, I'm skeptical. If he changes it, maybe.

Didn't tumblr's porn censor censor their own post announcing it? Or am I misremembering.

Tumblr’s biggest problem will be convincing users who already have an idea of what the site is (and frankly it’s generally not a good conception) to come back and give it a shot.

I do still regularly use Tumblr, and I can tell you: Tumblr users have a violently negative reaction to the idea of the site becoming more like Twitter. Trying to force through that change would destroy what little (commercial) value Tumblr has left. Just let it be its own thing, and if you want to make another Twitter, go build it somewhere else.

jfc let the kids have Tumblr in peace instead of turning it into another boomer cesspool.
