What people need to understand is that most of our material regarding Pirahã comes from a single researcher, because those folks do not like outsiders. That means: take it with a grain of salt.

Also, the language is potentially dying, explaining the lack of multiple features that you'd expect from a spoken language, as it's being slowly displaced by Ñe'engatú and Portuguese.

Even then, the language is not "based on whistling". The language can be encoded in "normal" speech or in whistling, just like Spanish would (see: silbo gomero). It's a fucking registre dammit, not the basis of a language!

This might blow the mind of nationalists, that immediately assume a 1:1 "magic" correlation between governments and cultures, but... this shit is culture-dependent, not government-dependent dammit. A country is a bloody government, not a culture.

I gave myself the trouble to read the article to the end, but frankly? It was a waste of my time.


The word "culture" is used 3x as much as "countries" and explicitly distinguished from culture.
