Christian Brabandt's excellent unicode.vim¹ can be a useful addition to the features mentioned in that article. Among its functionality is a better alternative to `ga` that also presents the name the character. For example, compare `ga` with unicode.vim's version:

    <> 128572, Hex 0001f63c, Octal 373074
    '' U+1F63C Dec:128572 CAT FACE WITH WRY SMILE &#x1F63C; /\%U1f63c "\U1f63c"
Edit: Imagine there is an unfiltered colorful cat peeking out between the <> and '' in the above text.
