Overleaf (https://www.overleaf.com) | REMOTE (UK/EU/US/Canada) | Full-time | Engineering Manager, DevOps Engineer, Software Engineer - Frontend/React

Overleaf builds modern collaborative authoring tools for scientists — like Google Docs for Science. We have over eight million registered users from around the world. Our primary product is an online, real-time collaborative editor for papers, theses, technical reports and other documents written in the LaTeX markup language. It’s used by around 400,000 people each day.

We’re currently hiring for three roles:

- DevOps Engineer: We’re looking for a devops engineer to help us run and maintain our microservice infrastructure, debug live problems, improve security and adopt new technologies and best practices. You will be working primarily with Google Kubernetes Engine and Terraform, although some knowledge of JavaScript and node.js will help.

- Software Engineer - Frontend/React: We’re looking for a frontend (or full-stack) engineer to help us finish migrating our remaining angular.js code to react, update our code editor from ACE to CodeMirror. In the longer term, we are planning projects around improved collaboration features for teams, improvements to our rich text mode to help non-LaTeX users, and more.

- Software Engineering Manager: We are looking to hire an enthusiastic Software Engineering Manager with strong engineering experience to join our team. You’ll be coaching and supporting engineers and helping them with their career development, as well as having input into our high-level planning processes. Alongside that you’ll be doing code review (in JavaScript) and acting as tech-lead on individual projects.

Some reasons you'd enjoy working with us:

- Most of our code is open-source and we're big fans of Free Software.

- We use the “Shape Up” development process, using an 8-week cycle to ensure regular delivery of improvements to the product.

- You’ll be working alongside a cross-functional team, including designers, product managers and developers, to help our users create their best work on Overleaf.

- Working hours can be flexible to your needs. Our core hours are 2pm–5pm UK time. Applicants must be based in the UK, EU, US or Canada.

- Remote is a first class citizen; even before the pandemic, all founders and employees worked remotely and this is part of our values: https://www.overleaf.com/about/values. When we can do so again, we'll get everyone together in London a few times a year for valuable face to face time.

HubSpot | Senior+ Engineer(s), Infrastructure Orchestration | Boston, MA or Remote (US-based) | Full-time

Hi! I'm an infrastructure engineering leader at HubSpot.

HubSpot is a marketing, sales, and services platform for growing businesses, and we're looking for senior engineer(s) for our lowest-level infrastructure provisioning / orchestration / tooling teams. One of our big projects revolves around building an end-to-end declarative representation of our infrastructure based entirely around Kubernetes and composable custom resource definitions (CRDs).

For our standard applications, a deploy is done with the push of a button and app developers do not need to think about Kubernetes manifests or even the existence of Kubernetes at all. So that portion of the problem is already completed at scale. What remains is handling all of the lower-level pieces of infrastructure and stateful services which are not easy to generalize for. We do this by extending Kubernetes with additional building blocks, rather than attempting to make an all-encompassing framework for doing so since such a framework would approach the complexity of Kubernetes itself. It can almost be thought of as building a lower-level PaaS for infrastructure teams.

With this model, each infra team builds CustomResourceDefinitions and operators to represent their services. For example:

- The Kafka team allows for creating a Kafka cluster via a KafkaCluster CRD

- The Kafka operator creates the ZooKeeper cluster (an underlying dependency) for that with a ZooKeeperCluster CRD, which is handled by the ZooKeeper team's operators

- Those operators get all of the secrets they need via our SecretTemplate CRD, handled by Infra Orch's kube secret operator (which injects Vault secrets into appropriate Kubernetes secrets)

The vision is to use CRDs for every un-automated corner of infrastructure, all the way down to the EC2 VPCs themselves. We're striving to reach a point where creating a new data center is done by applying the CRDs that define the top-level clusters, and everything else automatically is configured end-to-end with no manual human effort. For any case where there is a common problem that all teams running on Kubernetes must solve, our job is to find an abstraction for that problem.

If this sounds interesting to you, feel free to reach out to me (tpetr@hubspot.com), or apply directly via https://www.hubspot.com/careers/jobs/3212851

Thanks for reading!

** This is just the role that I'm personally hiring for. HubSpot is hiring like crazy across the board -- check out https://www.hubspot.com/careers/jobs?q=engineer for more details!

Parse.ly | Python Data Engineer or Infrastructure Engineer | Remote | Full-Time | https://parse.ly

Are you a Python programmer based in North or South America, interested in large-scale data processing (terabytes per month, petabytes in our archive), and making use of massively-parallel computing architectures, such as those behind Spark and Dask? Do you have any existing interests in real-time streaming data, such as can be powered by systems like Apache Kafka and Redis Streams? Or, are you a DevOps-minded Linux expert with a love of cloud automation, configuration management, and immutable architecture? If so, then you should apply for our fully distributed team, since we are hiring!

Python Data Engineers[1] write code that runs on hundreds of cloud nodes, using best-in-class distributed database technologies like Kafka, Cassandra, and Elasticsearch. Infrastructure Engineers[2] focus their Python and Linux skills on cloud server automation, such as Ansible and Terraform. Folks with both skillsets are on the same team, in the spirit of "true DevOps".

Members of this team power a massive time series analytics engine and content crawl database that offers an elegant user experience to hundreds of enterprise customers. We do all of this on a team that's "small enough to be nimble, but large enough to be dangerous." Right now, we are ~20 total product/engineering team members, spanning skills like backend Python batch / streaming jobs, frontend JavaScript / D3.js / Vue.js dashboard development / design, product management, and cloud automation with tools like Terraform and Ansible. About half of those engineers are in "Parse.ly Backend", which spans the Python Data Engineer and Infrastructure Engineer roles described above.

Join us to build the world's best content analytics system. Apply at work@parsely.com with a couple paragraphs describing why you're interested, and mark your subject line as either "Python Data Engineer via HN" or "Infrastructure Engineer via HN". In the email body, include your location/timezone in North America or South America; a link to any portfolio/code you think is relevant; a few lines or paragraphs on why the role is relevant to you; and/or direct attachment of your CV/resume.

We are wrapping up our 2021 hiring wave, after Parse.ly's recent acquisition by Automattic[3], which is itself: one of the world's largest fully distributed teams (1,800+ "Automatticians" with no central office, see: https://automattic.com/about/); one of the biggest champions of open source publishing + commerce (see: https://wordpress.com/features/, https://woocommerce.com/woocommerce-features/); and, the company behind popular technologies that power the open web (see: https://jetpack.com, https://akismet.com). We look forward to hearing from you!

Oso | Software Engineer, Developer Advocate, Eng Manager, Product Leader, Docs Product Owner & Technical Writer | New York City (NYC) | Onsite or Remote

Over the last 15 years, companies like AWS, Stripe, and Twilio have helped developers offload anything not core to their apps so they can focus on what matters to their users. Despite a lot of progress in developer tooling, most developers still roll their own authorization.

You might start with something quick 'n dirty – some IF statements and roles in a database, which may not be pretty but gets the job done...until you need to add more features, and more features. And inevitably every team band-aids onto this system until they do a big refactor. This is lost time for an area that's not core to what most companies are trying to solve for their users, and what's more, no one on the team is feeling great about this work.

At Oso (backed by Sequoia), we're building the first batteries-included framework for authorization so developers don't have to roll it on their own ever again. We're designing slick APIs to cut down the amount of time they spend getting their system set up, and building a fully-fledged policy engine and programming language (in Rust) under the hood to ensure they can customize their system however they need. We don't have any product managers – the engineers on the team are responsible for taking broad problems, experimenting with potential solutions and shipping a superhuman experience for our users.

The team members who join now will not only have a disproportionately large impact on the product, but also on the culture and future of the company.

We are based in NYC and hiring folks remote or onsite.

We are a small, dynamic team of dedicated Solution Engineers/Architects, Alliance Managers, and Open Source Community Managers and Evangelists. Our culture is built on teamwork, self-discipline, ownership, and humility. In this team, we have the chance to work on strategic products that have the potential to change the trajectory of the whole company.

We are passionate about promoting all things open source, both externally and inside the company!

In this role, you will be designing, implementing, and creating reproducible deployments of software systems and infrastructure published as open source references. As such, in this role you will have the freedom (and responsibility) to integrate production-ready practices and focus on the utility of projects as they are used by people trying to build applications but not able to make sense of the complexities common in modern applications. Generally, timelines are flexible, there is no need to carry a pager, and there is creative freedom to work within a project’s mission.

Typically, Solution Engineers have a history of working with at least three programming languages. They can offer an informed opinion regarding the trade-offs between static, dynamic and functional programming language features. They understand the principles of modular application architecture. Ideally, they understand algorithmic performance and can explain computational complexity. Moreover, they understand the real-world performance characteristics such as locking, Amdahl's law, and all the dirty things that happen when you run a program on hardware in the physical universe.

In addition to working on software systems, Solutions Engineers will be designing the infrastructure upon which the software runs. The team takes the approach of treating infrastructure as code and gives care to provide examples of working software and the infrastructure in which it is run. An understanding of the trade-offs between bare-metal, hardware virtualization, and containers is needed, and a Solutions Engineer can explain how you would create immutable infrastructure using any of the platforms. Conceptually, they understand L2-3 networking technologies and implementations of common L7 protocols, such that they know how compute instances communicate on a network.

Moreover, a Solution Engineer will have an interest in distributed systems, high availability patterns, cloud computing and debugging/tracing in production. They can articulate why one would or would not run Kubernetes depending on a use case, the trade-offs involved in microservices versus monoliths, and the benefits/drawbacks of cloud platforms. A Solutions Engineer will have built with Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Deployment (CD) systems in the past, and ideally understand the importance of mean time to repair (MTTR) and mean time to failure (MTTF).

An ideal candidate will have lived the pain of managing production systems and developed a pragmatic attitude towards shaping systems to be less fragile. This role will be an opportunity for them to share this experience with the wider community through work on reference architectures.

Slido | Multiple Roles | Remote EMEA | Full-Time | [https://www.sli.do/](https://www.sli.do/)

At Slido we are building an "audience interaction" platform - a tool thanks to which everyone can take something from a presentation or a meeting, whether there are 10 or 10,000 people. We are growing fast and looking for frontend, backend and analytics engineers to help us to bring it to a new level.

If you like difficult challenges (we are currently trying to scale up to handle 100x load) and enjoy working in a dynamic, startup like environment where engineering has a lot of say in the product development, do let us know — we would certainly like to hear from you!

Our tech stack is Typescript, React, Redux, Redis, ElasticSearch, MySQL, Python, Airflow, dbt, Terraform, k8s. We are running on AWS.

Our interview loop consists of two 1-hour phone/video screenings and take home coding task - and we've designed it to approximate realistic day-to-day coding and code review (no algorithm riddles).

Glimpse.ai | Senior Machine Learning Engineer - Deep Learning, Senior Full Stack Engineer | Baltimore, Maryland | Onsite, Full-time | VISA Sponsorship Available | $150k - $250k + Benefits + Equity | https://www.glimpse.ai

Glimpse.ai is a profitable, stable, and growing artificial intelligence startup that is building an NLP product that automatically writes content about any subject with the same level of quality, factual accuracy, and usefulness as a human. This product already has thousands of monthly paying subscribers and our MRR has been growing by 10% month over month.

Senior Machine Learning Engineer https://careers.glimpse.ai/o/senior-machine-learning-enginee...

You would be at the intersection of research and production code - taking our research roadmap and helping make it a reality. You will be helping our AI team take nascent research concepts and turn them into state of the art natural language generation. You will be constantly ingesting research papers, building prototypes, and later turning those prototypes into production code.

Our ML work almost exclusively involves very heavy deep learning (transformers) and we primarily use PyTorch.

You will be working directly with our Founder/CEO (me!), who is leading the AI team, both as a manager and an individual contributor.

If you have done work with transformers for text generation, information retrieval, or text style transfer (and especially if it has advanced SOTA), we would be very interested in talking with you. We would also be very interested in talking with people who have used Reinforcement Learning for NLP tasks.

Senior Full Stack Engineer https://careers.glimpse.ai/o/full-stack-engineer

You would be responsible for taking our AI and allowing giving our users ways to use and interact with it. What is the point of AI research if there is no way for anyone to use it and derive value from it?

Our stack primarily involves Ruby on Rails and JavaScript (React.js among others). We use technologies such as PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and RabbitMQ.

Our full stack team is still young enough that you will be able to have a lot of impact on the design, architecture, and stack that we use now and in the future.

If you have industry experience doing full stack work (no matter what the stack), we would love to hear from you. We would also be very interested in talking with people who have the experience and desire for a Team Lead position.
