We need to have a federal grant program to support development of open source software. The status quo of donations just isn't going to be sustainable decades from now when everything costs more money, and the answer shouldn't have to be injecting adware and more deals with some devil.

The HN discussion on the article shared about Facebook (over here, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28797325) made me wonder…

What if Mozilla sold super simple web hosting for personal and small business websites? Essentially, they’d add an edit button to the web (like Tim Burners Lee’s original web browser had on nEXT). Each customer gets personal web address. Add follow/subscribe features & discovery. Add privacy features. Seems like that might align well with the foundation mission & help support Firefox & the open web…

Mozilla has to make money somehow. From reading the article, this seems like a reasonable way to do it.

They are open source and many people contribute for free. It is not right for them to profit from their browser and their management has shown time and time again that they don't even care that much about reinvesting in Firefox.

yes but why are they not taking donations to support firefox?

Just let us donate directly to Firefox. Come on.
