Ask HN: CompSci or SoftEngi?

In the U.S computer science is a far more popular degree. Supposedly it focuses more on the theoretical aspects of computer software and algorithms than Software Engineer does.

From research Software Engineering is less math intensive and affordable in some areas.

Any thoughts on the validity of the education and employment opportunities?

Most software jobs don't require the deeper mathematical and technical aspects of a CS degree. The vast majority of developers these days just glue together libraries written by other people[0] and CS doesn't come into play for them.

... but if you find yourself in a career path where you need deeper CS knowledge but don't have it, you will really be up the creek without a paddle.

[0] And by that I mean "libraries written by people who do have CS degrees" or usually at least the equivalent knowledge.

You are generally correct. One is more likely to land a job while they are studying SoftEng than their CompEng counterpart (my experience and observation).
