If they alter the airflow direction sufficiently so that it comes from behind such barriers probably do have some benefit. There was a fluid dynamics study done of a café where some people were infected. When they modelled the airflow they found that those infected had been facing into the airflow. People facing downstream were not infected. I don't have the url to hand, if I find it I'll add another comment.
