Ask HN: Easiest way to setup a website for a non-techie
1 point by sharmi on Dec 7, 2020 | hide | past | favorite | 11 comments
Hi, My friend is a doctor. She has helped me out of a tight corner medically. I would like to return the favor. I hope to help her make a website to create a portfolio of her work. I also plan to optimize it for local search. Because it is a favor, I don't intend to charge.

I want to setup something very low maintenance (domain, blog etc) that she can manage herself. It is going to be low traffic.

For my blogs, I host wordpress on a digitalocean droplet. I am looking for something simpler for her.

Do you have any suggestions?

Probably a domain and web hosting registrar like namecheap with statically hosted html and css. If you are proficient at displaying high resolution images, then that is probably all thats needed for the average visually appealing website

Thank you for the suggestion, That would not work in this situation though as static files implies static generators. (I hope they would be adding more content as time passes). It would be too much for the lay person. I hope to be out of the loop once I get the site going and the basics setup.

Something on Carrd.co?

https://carrd.co/

Probably not the best for a blog, but would work for a static site.

Strikingly.com offers nice templates that a layperson can easily manage.

Thank you I will check it out.

buy a WordPress hosting service

Yes, I am leaning towards wordpress.com hosting but I hoped to see if there is anything new in the market that is more usable.

there's something like this https://www.greengeeks.com too

try to setup a web page using github pages and markdown language

That is something I would go for :)

Yet, this solution is for a doctor who has not used anything beyond a few apps on the phone. So I am looking a very userfriendly solution.
