What is your non-tech dream job?

What would you be doing for work if you weren't working in tech? I'm a mediocre web developer and while I enjoy writing code and helping small businesses and organizations get web sites and develop an online presence I've started to think that maybe this business isn't for me.

I still want to code and work on some personal projects but a recent thread on here lead me to a book on making simple furniture. I've made some crappy pieces in the past but am looking forward to making some less crappy pieces in my basement during the upcoming NH winter.

I'm sure there are a ton of reasons for many of you to not leave tech, but given the opportunity what would you like to do?

I left to grow and ended up sort of becoming an extractor / compliance / lab testing blend.

I feel like I've gotten to meet some of the best grow-room talent and they really are magicians. I've heard the same line of "they are just plants, how hard can it be?" from farms and two have failed, one is about to. If you don't hire and pay to retain talent (like FANNG does), you end up losing entire crops. A solid grower and management that responds to problems has really been the secret.

That being said, I've only seen the workhorses get beaten without many oats spread around. YMMV.

I'd like to grow gourmet mushrooms and supply local stores and restaurants.

Cool. Any chance you take some steps to get there?

Yeah actually, I've been learning, and I cloned a store bought mushroom, and tried to fruit it. So far my fruiting attempts have failed due to the hot summer, but I think when it cools down some I will try again.

Excellent. This summer was my first attempt at vegetable gardening. It was fun but not very fruitful unfortunately. I had high hopes for my tomatoes but they didn't do well. I'm looking forward to trying again next year. Hopefully better planning and reading more on the topic will lead to more success.

If we're talking big dreams, heir to Robert Ballard. I literally can't of anything I'd want to do more than traveling the world and finding old shipwrecks.

Being a research librarian at a tier one university might be interesting. I enjoy books and helping others find information.
