I was a experimental particle physicists and jumped straight into industry after academia. The trick is realizing you could do just about anything but there are very few jobs that require you to do it. The opposite of this would be say a Doctor, there is a very specific job he/she is meant.

What I found useful was to figure out of this infinite possibility of things I could do, what do I find most interesting and given my ability and scope of opportunities what could I do and still make a decent living? Then I funnel down and teach myself up to the graduate level in that thing.
