We had 3-4 decades (40's-70's) of 'lock in' when conventional computers were essentially 'big iron' that only large organizations had access to. If quantum computing ends up having useful general purpose applications, I'd expect it to start going down market once some combination of the implementation issues have been worked out, the big/easy money has been mined from government/corporate customers and patents expire.
