Ask HN: Experiences of moving from academia to industry, then back again
6 points by phonebucket 13 days ago | hide | past | web | favorite | discuss
I left academia (after one postdoc) to tech industry (data science) several years ago. The primary reason being a lack of job security in university life.

Striving to do novel work and share it with a wider community is what I have enjoyed most in my career, so I have started to consider going back to academia.

But I am worried on two counts: 1) it is a committal step which would make returning to industry much harder. 2) this is a matter of the grass being greener on the other side; my initial departure from academia was for the right reasons.

I feel there might be many on HN who have valuable advice. In particular, 1) hiring managers who consider people who have flitted between academia and industry and 2) people who have left and subsequently rejoined academia.

Thanks for any help!
