I think it was youth. My fondest memories of programming were Turbo Pascal. I used basic in the eighties but I was still a literal child. You were probably either a Gen-Xer or a little more precocious about programming than me.
In about five to ten years we'll have a spate of articles from nostalgic early Millenials about Turbo Pascal, Turbo C,
Watcom C and such, then a rash of remembarances about CGI-bin, then early Java....
Personally, I miss mode 13h at least twice a month.
