Folks that I worked with had the same idea: “Fortran was good enough for our ancestors, it is good enough for the world. And COBOL”

This was before the obscure language C was invented.

And as far as debugging is concerned, debuggers are overused. Reading “Programmers at work” you see that 1. They used the equivalent of printf for debugging 2. Mostly they had not read TAOCP 3. They did not like C++.
