Oauth is fine as an option, but when writing server-only analysis and mining tools its creates an unneeded step in the authentication process.

You can obtain one time keys via Twitter's own website for your app, then you just need to sign your requests, which isn't too bad (there are libraries for most languages).

I have not seen a library for bash, however, which is all the previous API needed.
