I wonder what you are talking about, my experience of windows remote access is that remote host even on local network sometimes just do not show up and access sometimes fails for no apparent reason with the added benefits of added vulnerabilites.

Besides plan9 and inferno are from the UNIX family and do transparent remote access way better than any windows or linux.
