The way I think about the markets - and a way that may help guide you in your quest to focus on this vast concept called the market - is to figure out what investment time horizon suits you best. On the short end of the scale you have your high-frequency players that care more about market-making and market-structure. On the other end of the scale you have the buy-and-hold investor. They look at the fundamentals of the company and try to invest for the long term. And then there is everyone in between.
